The Pantomime Ballet La chercheuse d’esprit (1777)
Maximilien Gardel’s La chercheuse d’esprit (1777) was one of the most frequently performed pantomime ballets at the Paris Opéra in the eighteenth century. It is arguably one of the “classics” of early ballet. Both the score and scenario survive, in addition to a fair amount of other supplementary material, although the choreography is lost. I have created a webpage on which the individual scenes are presented together with the accompanying music, which can be listened to (as violin-fortepiano arrangements as well as MIDI orchestra mockups).
